Emergency 911 calling guidance (Telus)

Emergency 911 Calling Before SIM Card Activation

In Canada, mobile phones are generally designed to connect to 911 through an available compatible wireless network, even without active mobile service.

However, TELUS has identified a technical limitation where 911 emergency calls will not connect when an unactivated ("blank") TELUS SIM card is inserted in the device.

Important Safety Guidelines

To ensure your safety, please follow these instructions:

  • Before SIM activation: Do not insert your new TELUS SIM card until your mobile number has been added to your account and activation is complete.
  • If you need to call 911 before activation: Remove the unactivated SIM card before making the emergency call.
  • After SIM activation: You may insert your SIM card and use your mobile service as usual.

Please note that emergency calling depends on device compatibility and available network coverage.
